The Might of the Miniature Cannon

Museum Talks: Sarawak Snapshots

14 July 2024: The Might of the Miniature Cannon by Alex Teo

Mr Alex Teoh, in his talk “The Might of the Miniature Cannon” focussed on the miniature cannons of the Borneo and the Malay Archipelago. These were once the preferred monetary tender, desirable marriage dowry, treasured heirlooms and status symbols of the locals. Crafted since the early sultanates, these cannons inherited the artistic, cultural and religious influence of trade with China, India, Middle East and Europe.

Today, only limited pieces remain (mostly in museums and official buildings) and no doubt these artifacts are worth understanding.

Alex Teoh is a paper and book conservator of rare manuscripts, collectible prints, antique maps, photo albums and antiquarian books. His focus is on the local material culture of the written text in Southeast Asia. His interest is also in the material culture and documentary heritage of Borneo. The link for the recording is here.
