Friends of Sarawak Museum (FoSM) was established and officially registered on 25 September 2012 as a membership-based society under the Malaysian Societies Act 1966. It is the first such society established in Sarawak, to provide opportunities for the public and members to be involved in promoting heritage through its museums. The first committee included Anthony Sebastian (President), Datuk Lim Kian Hock, Choo Mun Hua, Rebecca D’Cruz, Anthonius Lapan Sindang, Hat Hoklai, Edward Larkin Mansell, Anita Guha-MacGillivray and Louise Macul.
Approximately one year after its registration, Friends of Sarawak Museum was officially launched on 23 September 2013 at the Sarawak Museum.
The guest of honour, the then Sarawak Tourism Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari who is now the Premier of Sarawak, said ” Sarawak has a rich historical, natural and cultural heritage – from our music, dance, language and costumes to our natural resources and our food.”
Mr Anthony Sebastian, FoSM’s first President noted in the 2013 – 2014 Annual Report that the Executive Committee and Executive Director engage with the Sarawak Museum Department to build an understanding of how the society can work together to promote Sarawak’s dynamic heritage.
The activities (talks, events, school and docent programmes) have supported and extended the knowledge of Sarawak’s rich heritage.
